Right to repair is a software problem now
The battle over repair stopped being about screws and glue a while ago. You can get the device open. The question is whether the firmware will accept what you put back in.
Parts pairing
A genuine, brand-new, identical component from an identical device — screen, battery, camera, fingerprint sensor — installed correctly, and the device refuses it. Not because it does not work, but because its serial number is not the one registered to that mainboard. You get a persistent warning, or a degraded feature, or a dead sensor.
The justification offered is security and safety. Sometimes that is even partly true — a biometric sensor binding to a secure enclave is defensible. But it is applied to screens and batteries, where it is not, and the effect is uniform: the manufacturer keeps a veto over repair, and the only way to clear the veto is a proprietary tool available exclusively to authorised shops.
That is the actual mechanism. Not “you cannot fix it” — you cannot fix it and have it stay fixed unless you pay us for permission.
The other tactics
- Serialised diagnostics. Error codes deliberately undocumented, so the tool that tells you which component failed is itself gated.
- Firmware updates as an enforcement channel. A device that worked with a third-party part until an over-the-air update decided it should not.
- Parts availability as policy. Not sold to independents at all, or sold only in assemblies — a £4 charging port that must be bought as a £180 sub-board.
- Subscription-shaped hardware. Features present in the silicon you bought, unlocked by recurring payment. Heated seats are the famous case; the pattern is everywhere now.
- Cloud dependency. The device is fully functional and completely useless because the vendor turned off a server. No repair fixes this, which is exactly why it is the most dangerous one.
Why it is worth caring about
Repair is where every value on this site converges. Ownership: if you cannot open it, modify it, or fix it, you are leasing hardware and calling it a purchase. Privacy: devices that must call home to keep working are devices that report on you as a condition of function. Waste: a phone discarded over a £30 battery is roughly 60 kg of mining, refining and shipping thrown away for a consumable part. Cost: the total price of a device includes what it costs to keep it alive, and that number is being deliberately raised.
A device you cannot repair is a device someone else can end.
What actually works
Buy for repairability, not for specs
This is the highest-leverage decision, and it happens before you spend anything. Check the teardown before you check the benchmark. iFixit's repairability scores, and whether the manufacturer publishes service manuals and sells parts to the public, tell you more about ten-year cost of ownership than any review. Some vendors have built entire product lines around user-replaceable parts — that choice deserves to be rewarded with money, since that is the only signal the industry reliably reads.
Prefer boring, standard, documented
Standard screws, standard connectors, standard storage, standard batteries. Desktop hardware built from commodity parts is repairable more or less indefinitely; a sealed appliance is a consumable. This is a large part of why running your own server on ordinary components beats buying an appliance that does the same job: when something fails, you replace one part rather than the whole thing.
Software is how you extend hardware life
The most common cause of a “dead” machine is not dead hardware — it is an OS that stopped receiving updates, or a vendor that ended support. That is a solvable problem. A well-maintained Linux distribution turns a decade-old laptop into a perfectly good machine. Open firmware and community ROMs keep phones and routers patched years past their abandonment date. Open source is a repair strategy: code you can hold is a device nobody can remotely end.
Keep spares and keep notes
The cheapest repair is the one you already have the part for. When a machine is retired, keep the RAM, the drives, the PSU, the cables. And write down what you did — the model of the replacement, where you sourced it, the sequence that worked. Future you is going to do this again.
Support the legislation, and use it
Right-to-repair law is moving in the right direction in several jurisdictions: mandated parts availability, published manuals, defined support windows, restrictions on parts pairing. It advances when people make noise and stalls when they do not. Know what your region has passed, and exercise it — a right nobody claims gets quietly narrowed at the next revision.
The through-line with everything else here is the same one: control follows from independence. A library on your own disks, a service on your own hardware, a device you can open. None of it is about distrust for its own sake — it is about not having a single point of failure that belongs to someone whose interests are not yours.
